Summary[]

Cedric of Chessington beings his final tale of the Prince and the Knights of the Prince by continuing his account of his own journey.

Aboard one of the ships of the King's fleet, Cedric meets Cullen and Keely, two Followers from the United Cities of Cameria. He also meets a mysterious and intriguing woman named Talea, who claims to be neither from Arrethtrae nor a Silent Warrior. Utterly baffled by her, Cedric becomes convinced it would be better to avoid further contact. This is seemingly accomplished when the ships arrive in the Kingdom Across the Sea and the Followers are transported by carriage to the City of the King.

At the gates, the Followers are challenged by Micalem and a number of Silent Warriors, who declare that only one who has fulfilled the Code perfectly is worthy to enter. The only individual who can meet this qualification, the Prince, steps forward and declares that the Followers are worthy to enter because He died for them and they believed in Him. Great joy follows as the Followers take up residence in the City of the King, and many old friends are reunited. Notably, Keanna is able to join her husband Gavinaugh, who has been fully healed of his past injuries by the Life Spice that is infused into every aspect of the kingdom.

Cedric and William are stunned to meet a pair whom the Life Spice has had an even more miraculous effect upon: Leinad, now appearing only a few years older than they are, and his wife Tess. At a dinner at the pair's palace, Cedric is surprised to see Talea again, and even more to learn that she is Leinad and Tess' daughter. At Leinad's suggestion, Cedric challenges her on the Intrepid Course, a series of obstacles on which Talea has trained for years under the tutelage of the Silent Warrior Yutan. Talea proves a formidable opponent, and Cedric only claims victory due to her stumbling, causing him a great deal of embarrassment.

The Knights of the Prince settle into a new life, all benefitting from the effects of the Life Spice and continuing to train under the Prince. As several years pass, they receive reports from the Silent Warriors of worsening conditions in Arrethtrae under Lucius' reign. Eventually, a man named Fenton leads the people of Chessington in turning their hearts to the Prince and resisting Lucius, who responds by leaving Chessington to gather an army to destroy the city. In response to Fenton's pleas to the King, brought across the sea by Gabrik, the King and the Prince declare that the time has come to reclaim Arrethtrae.

Returning across the sea, the Knights of the Prince and Silent Warriors mass near Chessington, with the Prince organizing His forces under a number of captains. Cedric, William, and a handful of other knights are tasked with attacking Lucius' advance force in order to lure his entire massive army into a trap. This succeeds, and the Shadow Warriors and wicked Arrethraens find themselves surrounded by the army of the Prince. The Battle of the Ages ensues, and ends with the Prince defeating Lucius and being proclaimed the King of Arrethtrae.

With Lucius and most of the Shadow Warriors imprisoned in the Wasteland and their allies either imprisoned or pledging loyalty to the King of Arrethtrae, the Knights of the Prince are appointed as rulers and keepers of the peace in the land under the Prince. Cedric is appointed ambassador to the various regions of the kingdom, and both he and Talea are stunned when she is appointed as his assistant. Despite the awkwardness between them, they set out to assist their fellow knights as they establish their new governments.

Accompanying an entourage that travels to Cameria, Cedric and his companions eventually come across a distressed young woman named Kendra, who survived in the wilderness during the terrible years in which Lucius reigned over the kingdom. Shortly after hearing her story, the group is attacked by brigands loyal to Lucius. Fortunately, a force of Knights of the Prince under Cullen arrives to help them, and an unexpected and joyous reunion takes place as Kendra proves to be another of Cullen's sisters. William, assigned as governor to the region of Cameria, parts ways with Cedric, and within a few years' time is betrothed to Kendra.

With the forces of Lucius imprisoned, subdued, or scattered, a golden age of peace spreads across Arrethtrae. Life Spice is planted across the land, allowing all to enjoy its benefits. The Prince soon ordains an annual feast in which the Followers of the Prince seal themselves to the King by drinking bitter wine. As the years pass, Cedric finds himself developing feelings for Talea, but unsure of how she feels about him in return.

In the tenth year of the Prince's reign as King of Arrethtrae, which is to be commemorated by a feast in which all Followers are to gather at Chessington, Cedric and Talea reunite for a tour of duty as ambassadors in the north of the kingdom. As they travel north, they receive disturbing reports and encounter unsettling signs that all is no longer well in the kingdom. Things come to a head in Norwex, where Talea is hit by an arrow intended for Cedric while they are staying with the regional governor.

Cedric soon learns that the governor's son has become involved in a plot that involves several free Shadow Warriors and Arrethtraens who seek to overthrow the Prince and reinstate Lucius as ruler of the land. He and other Followers are imprisoned but rescued by Talea, only to learn that Lucius' forces have been freed from the Wasteland and are making their way south to Chessington. Cedric and Talea desperately race in that direction in order to bring warning to the Prince, and in the process Cedric confesses his feelings to her and is rewarded by her admitting her own affection for him.

After a harrowing encounter with Lucius' monstrous Scynths, the pair come across Lucius' army, an unprecedented force of Shadow Warriors and Arrethtraen rebels from across the entire kingdom. After battling several Shadow Warriors, they manage to reach Chessington with news of the imminent attack. Their efforts seem in vain, for the enemy army far outnumbers the assembled Followers. In spite of this, the Prince is undaunted and defies Lucius as they confront each other one final time.

No battle takes place, for the King Himself appears and unleashes the doom of Lucius and all who follow him: Vactors of Fire. These creatures consume all life in Arrethtrae, save the King and the Prince and those who have been sealed to them through the bitter wine. With their enemies conquered forever, the Followers once again board the ships of the King to depart Arrethtrae. Awaiting them is a new kingdom, a new Chessington, and even greater adventures.
